Emily Carr is a Learning Experience Designer, All-Purpose Educator, Author & Fitness Trainer based on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

I teach. I write. I coach.

I am trained as a doctor of poetry, I self-identify as a joyous revolutionary arts educator and your best fitness friend, and I specialize in jolting folks into imaginative leaps and physical feats they didn’t know they had inside them.

I have worn a lot of hats (usually simultaneously!), and in my diverse career this is the thorough-line: figuring out what arts and educational organizations need to translate their BIG DREAMS into resilient, fiscally-responsible realities, and then putting systems, structures, people, and processes in place to make that happen.

From my work building two brand-new Creative Writing programs from scratch, to developing storytelling and wellness programming for Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, to designing family fitness bootcamps and poetry slam workshops for GIRLS, Inc., to coaching individuals in the transformative power of storytelling and strength training—my goal has always been to help others find the sweet spot where work and play are one.

Because when work is play, and play is work: we thrive, at home and at work.

When we infuse work with play, we are happier, healthier, more confident, and more productive.

When we approach work as playful and play as productive, we are more likely to learn from our failures, value the process as much as the product, and take the kinds of creative risks that lead to cognitive breakthroughs.

Let me help you and your team reach those conclusions too!

What are some of my accomplishments?

In my 10+ years’ experience, I excel at working with diverse stakeholders, including senior leadership, subject matter experts, peers, and clients on projects that involve:

  • Designing and managing hybrid and in-person curricula for diverse audiences.

  • Developing, administering, and assessing employee and student recruitment and onboarding programs.

  • Utilizing assessment data to drive changes in curriculum.

  • Implementing protocols and procedures to create learning environments in which everyone, regardless of background, ability, experience, and identification, feels brave and can learn and grow at their highest level.

What makes me so unique as a learning experience designer?

I've worn a lot of hats, all of which help to create innovative opportunities for learning and development and which make me an expert at working outside my expertise, learning on the job, taking creative risks, learning as much from my failures as my successes, and inspiring others to do the same!

  • All of my writing workshops are designed to reconnect folks with parts of themselves they have forgotten how to remember—or left out in order to fit in.

Recent workshops include Family as Fodder, Telling Other People’s Stories, Moth-style Storytelling (5-12 minutes, true, performed live), Digital Storytelling (5 minutes or less, true, incorporating text, image, and sound), Photopoetry Recess (photography + poetry), Creative Flow (yoga + writing), and HIIT for the Heart: Writing & Resilience (in which we train our hearts like athletes do, because the heart is a muscle, too).

I’ve led workshops in-person and online, for colleges, libraries, middle schools, museums, yoga studios, public parks, energy ball companies, banking conferences, medical schools, medical conferences, and MORE!

Former participant Deborah Marini reports that: “Whenever my friends and family asked me about Emily’s workshop, excitedly I expressed what a wonderful experience. It made me realize that anyone can be a poet.

This class has changed my life forever. I constantly think about spark words and phrases. The way I look at the world and art pieces are very different than before I started this adventure. Today, I purchased two new journals, and colored pens and pencils, so that I can write new work wherever life takes me. I can't wait to see what I write in these journals.

Emily Carr is an amazing instructor and person. The class format was amazing. She was so patient and encouraging. I loved working with her and am hopeful that our journey will continue.”

I am on a mission to reconnect everyone—YOU—with the artist you forgot you had inside you. (We all have one—she might write a poem, bake a loaf of bread, compose a symphony, make a child or a day—regardless, we all have one!)

    Hourly starting at $100/ hour.

    Packages available upon request.
