Problem & Solution | Pull vs. Push

I was hired by conference organizers to lead a session on writing and resilience for NEXT: Sessions On Leadership 2021. I was not convinced that a one-off workshop would in fact help women bankers process stress and other negative feelings. I was also tired of the one-and-done, facilitator-centric VILT format. I felt that, if women bankers were truly to benefit from my workshop, I needed to teach them how to use a resource they could access 24-7 after the conference. Just like a personal trainer would teach a client how to use the rowing machine.

This exemplifies what Julie Dirksen calls a “pull vs. push” approach to learning: my job is to provide resources, lessons and materials so learners can choose when and how they need to learn.

Instructional Design Highlights | HIIT for the ♥︎

I've been a fitness professional for two decades, and believe that we could all benefit from athletic training. Working with adult learning principles like SAM, ADDIE, and OK-LCD, I've designed innovative learning experiences based on the HIIT (high intensity interval training) model.

I use to HIIT to train participants in quick, intense, effective bursts, alternating between information, inspiration, activity, and reflection in 2-3 minute intervals. These sequential, scaffolded "micro-learning" experiences are fun and challenging and, like a HIIT class, prime learners for the heavy-lifting when they're back at work. Why? Because the heart and mind are muscles, too, and it helps if we train them like athletes do.
